These are my digital paintings. I create them on an apple iPad pro in the procreate app.
You will see two primary types of drawings in this section. The first type is a study type of drawing. These: “Studies” tend to be very ridgid feeling and they may not be very well designed, because it is a fact gathering type of drawing these drawing lead to the second type of drawing. The imagined drawing/ designed drawing, is the second type of drawing) these drawings can be either something I just made up or a composed and well designed piece that started as a “study”. These imagined drawings will most likely be finished up in illustrator. This pieces while are not very accurate representations of the world they are more flexible and dynamic and are ideal for comerical use.
All of these paintings are made with custom color palettes .
Fading Light
This painting was made for a Commission for a friend. From start to finish this took roughly a month. This painting was made from multiple images and synthesized into one coherent piece. This painting was a great challenge and also a great success. This was my first time successfully piecing together an image that previously did not exist and not much reference existed for its creation.
“Dogg’in”
This was one of my most ambitious paintings on an iPad so far. This painting has some very complex objects like the glasses and the beer bottle. The lighting of the small solo cup was a challenge as well because there is a red light showing through the umbrella. All in all this was a great painting and I learned so much from this.
“Challenge”
I began this painting with a palette. It consisted of a full strength Red Violet and half hues of Yellow Green and Green. I did this as a color and light Study. The idea was: What would this strange palette create? And would the solidity of light withstand contrasting highlights? I progressed with caution but was surprised to see that for the most part the color and the lighting was strong and stayed intact in this unrealistic scenario. Also, the yin-yang element in the glass jar was made up.
“Sharkie Bar & GRill” (Progression). This is a progression of a DIGITAL illustration. This was made first from a color palette & a Design, from there I added all the necessary parts.
This is the final piece in full-scale.
“The Blender”
This painting was done very quickly. I had the feeling for the colors I wanted to use early on, so I didn’t struggle too much with color.
“Barn Swallow”
This was a fun little project I put together. It took a few years to gain enough skills to pull this off. This Swallow was created with a two color palette. And in the end was a really great project.
“LIGHT”
This is a new direction in digital painting. I have been working hard trying to understand color and light. I have tried to do similar paintings with traditional oil paints but either the colors got muddy or the reflected light off the glossy texture of the dried paint. In this painting I was able to confidently know that what I painting would show up clearly. I tried to be as loose with color in this painting. In the end I am really happy with the final product.
“Everything Works out in the end”
This is the keystone piece in my digital painting. I had a great time using this color palette and everything came out great I could not be happier with the colors the craftsmanship and the final piece. .
Paul’s Catch’em All Sketch
This painting is the original sketch for my: “Paul’s Catch’em All” Faux Marketing Campaign (Check out my Faux Marketing Campaign page). This sketch was started with a custom color palette. I was originally going to call this Ben’s Catch’em All but Paul’s Catch’em All works out better. The idea came to me while I was surfing and from there everything just fell right into place.
“study”
This was a very quick painting I did. I did this in three sessions. My focus was working on focus, color and light. This was a challenging painting but one that I really enjoyed and grew with.
!Tequila Time!
This was a brief digital painting I did to keep my skills sharp and mess around with some colors.
“Psych”
This painting motif is sorta sad. The idea was that it was the phone of the HR manager of a place I worked. The sad part is the HR manager never took me seriously and they joked about how they did not take me seriously.
INKIE HANDS
I made this for my co-worker at fourg athletics. He runs the heat press. He always jokes about forming a union and he suggested we press sandwiches on the heat press. Also the power tripped one day because we had too many heat presses running. So I made this illustration to everything going on together in one image.
Ironbound
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
SLow Cheetah
This is based off the red hot chili peppers song: “Slow Cheetah”. This is mostly my embodiment of the song and to me it is the only way a cheetah could move that slowly!
“Leo”
This is a first draft of an animal illustration I am creating.
“Tork God”
This is a digital painting I created for a t-shirt design. I had to closely follow the client’s request for imagery used. I had the freedom to create the composition. After this sketch was finished I vectorized it. I also have this painting featured in my: “Vectored Projects” it is the first piece in a slideshow where I show my process from drawing to final artwork.
“John’s Lemoncello”
This was my first attempt at making a logo with the app procreate. By working with procreate my process is sped up because by working on a digital platform nothing is lost when I scan in a drawing to adobe illustrator. Also the added benefit of working with color and all the nuances that accompany working with color allow me to create a very detailed drawing that spells out every color, tone and shape shift in the drawing leaving less time to interpreting a drawing I made and more time refining the finished product.
“Halo”
“Test run”
This is my first digital painting.
